IVY PLACE GREENWAY PROJECT:

Jun 23, 2022: Council has directed staff to develop a report regarding the potential for protecting the Ivy Place Greenway.

MYRTLE AVENUE GREENSPACE:

July 2018: The City of Victoria approved development leading to destruction of zoned greenspace on Myrtle Avenue. July 26, 2018: Six residents of Victoria present issues of Myrtle St and the C1-L zoning bylaw to Council meeting - Councillor Alto assigned to project. Oct 4, 2018: Committee of the Whole (COTW) report recommended C1-L amendments. Passed at Council meeting. Staff directed to amend C1-L bylaw. Jan 24, 2019: Another COTW report now recommended to send project to Oakland Community Association (OCA). Jan 31, 2019: Passed at Council meeting to send project to OCA. 2019 (Feb-Dec): Nothing done. 2020: Nothing done. 2021: Nothing done. Feb 23, 2022: Nothing done to date.

TOPAZ PARK NATURAL AREA TO BE PRESERVED:

June 2018: The Natural Areas in Topaz Park were being threatened, but due to great public support the City has decided to preserve and enhance the Natural Areas.

DONCASTER WALKWAY:

August 2016: The Doncaster walkway, which connects Hillside and Myrtle, has been upgraded but significant issues remain.

BOWKER CREEK - JANE'S WALK:

May 7, 2016: Soren Henrich lead a walk along Bowker Creek as part of the global movement of free, citizen-led walking tours.

UPPER RYAN STREET UPGRADES:

April, 2016: On April 4, 2016, 7pm there were discussions on the paving along Ryan Street from Asquith to Roseberry, which could also include continuing the sidewalk along the north side of the street. LARGE GARRY OAK:

Nov 17, 2015: A large Garry Oak in the block behind us (Avebury) came crashing down right barely missing the cars and houses. This downed Garry Oak was featured on the front page of the Times Colonist.

BEGBIE GREEN:

May 2, 2015: There was an interesting Ryan to Fern Janes Walk that included Oaklands Green and the Ryan Street Greenway (and was tweeted live as we went along). We saw interesting boulevard gardens along the way and finished up at the Fern Street Greenway (a very interesting hidden park that has recently added native plants with a Greenway's grant). Begbie Green (corner of Begbie and Shelbourne) is planned to be enhanced over the coming years. One issue highlighted was why more could not have been done for a Sequoia tree: 2009 view and 2011 view. There was an Ice Cream Social to gather input in Sept 2014 for Begbie Green - isn't that cool? Looks like a lot can be done and improved, but it sure would be nice to see what some proposed plans might be for Begbie Green? - even a "strawman" would be great so we can all have a common concept to contribute to. June 4, 2015: The City of Victoria has just announced that it is looking for Community input on how to improve Begbie Green. For more information, click here. LOCAL NATIVE PLANTS:

The Ryan Street Greenway has been established a few years ago where once there was a gravel parking lot. There are also a number of native plant front-yard gardens on Asquith Street; 2758, 2754, 2749, and 2615. There is also a native garden (and public vegetable garden on the boulevard) at the corner of Haultain and Asquith and a public park, Oaklands Green Park, across from the Oaklands Community Centre. It has inherited many camas from the Cridge. Do not pick any wild flowers or go on any sites without proper permission. A recent study by the Garry Oak Recovery Team shows 188 significant Garry Oak sites in Canada, of which only 6 are in Victoria. Two of those significant sites from Victoria are right here in the Oaklands area - the Cridge and Oaklands School!
